The new Adams City High School
I had the opportunity to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony and tour of Adams 14's newest school, Adams City HS. This is the district's first new school building since the mid-20th century, and the facility is a stunning example of what a 21st century learning environment requires. ACHS is officially authorized as an International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme school. Only 25 high schools in Colorado offer this rigorous academic program for students. In total, Adams 14 now offers International Baccalaureate for students in grades K-12 at Alsup Elementary, Adams City and Kearney Middle Schools, and Adams City High School. Students completing the full IB Diploma Programme have the opportunity to earn credit hours that can be transferred to a Colorado postsecondary institution. A student who successfully completes this program could enter college as a sophomore. Congratulations, Adams 14 and ACHS!

Another chance for you to weigh in on the new state standards!
Together with the Governor's office, the state legislature and the state Department of Education, the State Board has made it a priority to set high, rigorous expectations for what students should know and be able to do, and make sure we have a quality system to measure students' progress toward meeting those expectations.

Colorado's current academic standards for thirteen content areas, covering grades K-12, have been in place since 1995. In 2007, the State Board of Education recommended a comprehensive revision of all standards to make sure they are appropriate for the needs of the 21st century. In 2008, the legislature passed Senate Bill 212 which requires the creation of a seamless, 21st century standards policy system from early childhood through higher education, or P-20. SB 212 also states that the State Board must adopt the new standards by December 2009. This standards revision is being done in three phases, and the Phase 3 DRAFTS are now available for public review and feedback. I encourage you to view the Phase 3 DRAFTS (dance, theater/drama, physical education, visual arts and world languages) at http://www.cde.state.co.us/cdeassess/UAS/DraftStandards.html and to e-mail questions, comments, etc. to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. In addition, regional tours for public feedback on the DRAFT standards are being held statewide. The Phase 3 tours scheduled for the metro area are as follows:

All meetings take place from 5:30-8:30 pm. You are welcome to attend all or any part of the session.
